Because of its similar name, people often make comparisons of which is better. Now Tran's sauce is different enough from Chakkapak's sauce where the former is thick like ketchup and the latter is runnier and has a tangy taste.
He named it Sriracha after a Thai surf town where he liked the sauce. When I searched why David Tran named his sauce Sriracha, I got this response: The sauce was invented in the 1930s by Thanom Chakkapak and is called Sriraja Panich, named after the town of Sri Racha where it was invented. Many of my Thai friends often boast Sriracha's Thai origins. It's not actually as popularized in Asian countries, much to the disbelief of many of my non-Asian friends. I personally think it's acceptable to say the sauce is simply American (Asian-American, akin to Chop Suey) because it's here that the sauce is manufactured and sold. Or that it's Thai because the original sauce and its name Sriracha comes from the town of Sri Racha, Thailand. Or that it's Vietnamese because it was founded by a Vietnamese man. Such that the sauce is Chinese because of the Chinese writing on the bottle. Over the years, I've heard various people say different things about its origin.
